Acrylic on canvas (2019)
180 x 170 cm
What is it like painting on a large scale - on a canvas that's almost 2m across? To Ashlee O'Hagan, it was like moving from a single bed back to a queen - so much room to stretch and reach and extend. She's always been attracted to painting larger-than-life (literally) figures. They envelop you and command attention in an overt and loud way that small scale works just cannot do.
The resultant work is this beautiful painting named 'Removed'.
The squared space posed compositional challenges Ashlee enjoyed working through, and the balance between trying to communicate a story without losing the valuable tension that comes from keeping meaning partially veiled kept her engaged for months.
